Where the facts come from

Every factual claim on this site links to its source. This is the full list.

How we checked

Each fact was written alongside its source. Our build script stores the source text and, for every fact, checks that the key words and figures really appear in it. 293 of 293 facts and species names currently pass that check. Where sources disagree, as they do on species counts, the barn owl age record, little owl numbers and the tawny owl trend, we show both. Sources marked search extract (mostly Manx BirdLife) block automated reading, so we checked those facts against search-engine extracts of the page, not the page itself. See corrections & uncertainties.

Main sources: the Barn Owl Trust, the BTO, the RSPB, the RSPCA, Manx BirdLife, Manx Wildlife Trust, and English Wikipedia for taxonomy, anatomy and world species.
